Forum Rules Changing

Post by FF-Cernunnos » Tue Feb 27, 2007 23:49

In recent months we have been hit by a spate of posts by people advertising porn amongst other things, the latest was some idiot advertising for some roofing repair company!

Anyway after some guidance and assistance from Goose I have begun setting the open forums, except anything goes, so that only people within the FreedomFighters group can access them.

If your not already part of this group then please request access and I will grant it if I recognise you. If not I'll be pm'ing you to see who you are.

Due to me having to remove posts of people generally spreading their legs and sitting in various positions or on top of things I've changed Anything Goes to a private forum. I've added Anything Goes to all of the different usergroups so anyone who signs up for a group should have access. If you dont then please let me know via PM and I'll sort it out.

I've been contacted by a couple of people recently asking if they can help clearing up the user list which has been filled up with accounts created by bots.

The simple answer is no.

The more complicated answer is that Martin, I and I assume Mark (BOFH) are looking into ways of sorting this out. Watch this space.

You should all hopefully recieve both an email and a pm today stating that all users with 0 posts will be deleted on the 20th of October.

This allows us to delete the spam user accounts which have been created by numerous bots over the past few months.

I couldnt be bothered to wait another hour so I started early.

I've just deleted close to 2000 user accounts from the database. All of these accounts showed 0 posts. A minority of them may have actually belonged to real people but I believe that 99.9% of them were bots.

If you know someone who has had their account deleted please inform them that they should create a new user account and request access to Anything Goes or another forum AND POST!

To give an example of how bad the bot problem has become and why we have had to take action, I deleted a total of 597 accounts for the month of October 2007 alone, and at time of posting we're only 20 days in.

Doesn't the CAPTCHA image in the registration work in keeping the bots outside, or was this also recently added in an attempt to ban the bots?

Strange. The CAPTCHA image used looks pretty easy to OCR though, so a stronger CAPTCHA might do the trick. Either that or the CAPTCHA implementation in phpBB can be bypassed.

A little search on the standard phpBB CAPTCHA showed it is indeed pretty weak and can be bypassed easily. There are several better CAPTCHA implementations available that should do a better job at bots registering an account. The challenge is ofcourse which is good. Wikipedia has a nice page on CAPTCHA and what should be considered strong against the current anti-captcha software used by spammers.
