Nostalgia

Post by FF- Lightning » Wed May 27, 2009 20:44

So I'm working on exporting "Favorites" from AOL, their version of bookmarks, so I can finally get my parents away from that program/company, and I look through my old (OLD OLD OLD) account...

"Name I saved it as" - URL
"Welcome to the Freedom Fighters Gaming Network" - http://home.sol.no/~ygg/ffsquad/index.html
"News" - http://home.online.no/~alfijoha/ffsquad/fs2/main.html
"News REAL" - http://home.online.no/~alfijoha/ffsquad/fs2/main.html
(don't know what the differences are between those two)
"Freedom Fighters - freedom, freedom fighters, fighters, ff, fight, http://www.ffighte" - http://www.ffighters.com/index2.php
"Freedom Fighters" - http://www.ffighters.com/index2.php

Now... these are more or less dead, however, some poking in the WayBack machine, the archive of the internet, revealed that it has some record of one of the sites:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://hom ... /main.html

Specifically:
January 24, 2001 - http://web.archive.org/web/200101240945 ... /main.html
April 11, 2001 - http://web.archive.org/web/200104110041 ... /main.html
June 11, 2001 - http://web.archive.org/web/200106111445 ... /main.html

As a note: The background, if I recall correctly, used to be a starry picture of space. As that's gone, and most of the text was white, you may need to select everything to read anything.

From one of the pages:

FF-Steve [E-mail] | FF-TempIIC [E-mail]
FF-Nemesis [E-mail] | FF-CernIIC [E-mail]

In all likelihood, this is going to be one of those posts where I say something, bring back a lot of memories, and go unheard from for a long time, again... But I just felt I should share this with whoever's left after all this time.
Take care, all.

Edit: By the way, thanks for not banning me for having a gmail account.
It's been so long...

WOW that is before I joined. Its cool to belong to a gaming community that has lasted this long. I hope a game will come along soon and bring us all back to playing before we get too old.

Whats really interesting is the amount of people on that list of pilots who are still around here...somewhere.

*waves* approaching the ten year mark ladies and gents...

In fact, i think its been even past that already.
I started playing online back in 1999, and joined the FF in Februari that year. So that does imply that the foundation of the freedom fighters is over 10 years old as me being here as well... my god!

Right on man, thanks for this :D.

I actually have saved all FF emails I've ever received - particularly those back in the day. And esepcially the fateful one of Neo giving Master and I the reins of the NA wing. I take a read of them like every year or two. It is a good feeling knowing how far this great group of people have come and what we've gone through. Really love being a part of it.

And I intend on remaining a part of it in one way or another.

We have a great little community and its longevity is evidence of that.
It is amazing how many have come and gone and how many games we have participated in those 10+ years.

Cheers to all those that have stuck around for so long!

Thanks a lot for sharing this with us! This is indeed very nice! I was pretty happy to see the old site still has lot of info somewhere ;) Even the News archive is active, nice to read my own new member message back in April 2000. Last News must be from January 2001 so it's really old stuff :D

Too bad the forum topics themselves aint readable anymore hehe.

Need to save those sites on my machine before it's all gone like my HDD decided lately

Would be early 2010 when looking at first news post in the news archive March 2000.

Its nice how many links still work, the link gallery even brought me to the Squadwar Page, the VBB, even the Squad War Forum is still there :D

Oh all those memories :D Lots of old vets posting there, including Farrman & Master :D

Another nice SW Forum partially still works as this topic shows :D

I had a weird dream last night of logging into FS2, seeing about 20 games, joining one and, amongst FF names that I have no idea where the hell they came from there was of course Darkhalf.

No matter what time or what day it was, somehow somewhere there was always Darkhalf sitting up late at night playing FS2. Teaching me the ropes.

That was a strange dream :S

Forgive me for a minor hijack... However i thought the title was most fitting for this -

Not sure how many of you guys ever played this back in your youth...but sure brings back memories for me. Might still have the floppy disks with it on, although prolly not....

Sorry for bumping old topics :P

Just had a look around last night which brought lots of good memories up reading all those old news me joining FF, passing BIT, our own Tourney and so on. Amazing how many sites still are available more or less. Wish we could have access to our old Forums really :(
